While Freight Volumes are Down, Priorities Should Move to Process Improvement

As headlines have well pointed out, there's a shrinking demand for general goods amid a global economic downturn. Additionally, import freight volumes are shifting east from California amid a volatile few months between AB5 and fears of a west coast labor strike.

How Much Control do Supply Chain Operators have?

Businesses are working to maximize capacity and throughput all the time - but not all strategies to do so are the same. There are start-ups that focus on growth with an obsession to manifest the kind of returns dreamed up in boardrooms, but whose degrees of success depend on patience and execution. Then there are staples in various industries - Apple, Ford, Morgan Stanley, British Petroleum, and others that are looking for the same efficiency gains, but who are well into the middle of their corporate lifecycle and thus have cash, stability, and access to capital that enables them to do this. Deriving efficiencies - in these two examples - are mostly an internal function related to manufacturing costs, acquisitions, hiring, execution, etc. Supply chains are much, much more convoluted in the sense that for businesses that run them, so much is left up to things out of their immediate control. That’s not to say that the aforementioned companies live in a world where they have total control, hardly the case; but they have so much more than those working in logistics. Let’s elaborate.

How a Cal Poly Study Illustrates the Need for Strategic Integrations.

For this week's blog, we’ve combed through one academic study in particular - one we think does an excellent job outlining the various and disparate technologies in the industry, but also one that we think PortPro can help add to by way of this blog. A link to the article is shared at the bottom of this post and a PDF can be downloaded for free from the provided website. The study was prepared for the USDA (Department of Agriculture) and focused on ag exports in its thesis. However, given the broad nature and exposure the marine terminals in LA/LB have, the study quickly expands to cover the more general flow on containerized cargo as well. The authors are both tenured Cal Poly Professors, Chris Carr & Cyrus Ramezani. Full credit is due to them for the extensive research - and what we know - was a cumbersome process.

Congestion Trends Continue, PortPro Solutions to Help

The pitch for the industry to adopt better tools remains strong. Look no further than the plethora of headlines on JOC, Freight Waves, & Transport Topics - empty return hurdles, new appointment requirements, container dwell and demurrage charges, per diem highs, equipment shortages, and capacity continue to dominate the spectrum of conversation. Like our last two blog posts, we could keep hammering away about how technology, integrated systems, and collaboration could help derive solutions, but I think our time is better spent bringing some common overlapping issues to light. Make no mistake - PortPro is working on a number of solutions designed to tackle these exact problems, but selling is not something we’re having a hard time with. In fact, some of these problems push the industry right to our backyard. However, we realize we need to evolve and adapt with the industry as much as helping it do so as a leader. As such, some highlights below as food for thought.
